Is it music? [ft. Foamy The Squirrel]
There is a rather long debate going on in a certain forum I visit regarding whether dubstep is music or not. It was kicked off by someone stating that to them, it is not music and dubstep does not sound like “songs” as that person interprets them. I happen to agree with this last. I would not make the argument that dubstep is not music, though. I think that if the artist who created it CALLS it music, then you have to concede that it is, whether it sounds like it to you or not. There is also nothing wrong with stating that it does not sound like music to you. Everybody’s ear is different and it IS a matter of personal taste what sounds like “music” to somebody.
Some people get really offended if you dislike the music they like for some reason or say anything about it that isn’t “OMG, I LOVE ______!!” I have never understood that. What does it matter if someone doesn’t like what you like? What does it matter what they say about it? Dude, I LOVE metal of all kinds. Do you have ANY idea how many people say it just sounds like noise to them? I don’t get all upset about it. I don’t care at all. That’s their opinion and they have a right to it. What the fuck does it matter to me? I certainly wouldn’t say they must have limited exposure to only shitty music or an “uneducated ear” if they didn’t like it, which is what was being said to the guy who initially stated dubstep did not sound like music to him. Music is SUCH a matter of personal preference that it’s really arrogant to make statements like that, or to feel that you are so much MORE well-versed and better-educated than the other person that you should be able to correct their personal taste or opinion for them. The person has already stated they’ve heard hundreds of songs from the genre and they still don’t like it or feel it’s music. You counter with the fact that there are THOUSANDS of songs in the genre and the person needs to hear all of them before they can have an opinion? Seriously? That’s pretty ridiculous.
Music is a personal choice. It’s a personal preference. I don’t really understand why everybody can’t agree on that. Even if they can get him to agree that it’s music – which looks unlikely – that is not going to suddenly make him like it or lend it any more validation in his mind. They keep saying they don’t care that he doesn’t like it, that it’s fine if he doesn’t but 6 pages and 100 posts would seem to render that a bit unbelievable. I seriously do not understand why these people are on such a crusade but it reminds me of this:
And with that, I leave you to ponder not if it’s really music but if anyone has a right to try and ENFORCE what other people should consider music.
