Goodbye to Free Speech. Hello, ego.
So a popular (maybe “infamous” is a better word) industrial music forum is going to close. I can’t say I’ll miss it, because I won’t. The people there were vile, obnoxious assholes and they were permitted to act like that unchecked for years. I never saw such horrible behavior allowed on a forum. And the funny thing is, it is not being closed because it is such a cesspool of fanboys, self-proclaimed experts and dickheads. It’s being closed because people dared to criticize the journalism of the magazine it is attached to. Well, the journalism, quite frankly, is bad. It is billed as “news” when it is opinion-filled fodder. And not just opinion-filled. It’s also riddled with insults against the bands and labels he is reporting about. That is ridiculous. Apparently, the magazine editor (who is also the reporter, writer, creator and owns/runs a label) cannot handle dissenting opinions and once a thread was created criticizing his “journalism”, that was the end of the free speech.
We did send this label a demo 3 or 4 years ago I think but once we saw that the same man who ran that hideous magazine and forum was the same man who ran the label, we never took them seriously again. We are not interested in a label anymore anyway; they are unecessary now but even if I was, I would never sign to a label that allows their forum to be run like that or puts open letters to other artists insulting them and cussing them out on the front page of their “news magazine.”
My response to his announcement was this:
“So you believe in free speech and people being able to have – and speak – their opinions but yet you decide to end the forum coincidentally right after just about EVERYBODY gives their opinion on your “journalism”? It’s a good thing we were all born yesterday, otherwise we just might see through this. I especially like the part where you say that you will be going after trolls when I think what you really mean is people who insult you. I’m sure the pages-long flame wars and ridiculously vile things people say to each other will still go on unchecked. I will not miss Side-Line forum. A lot of people won’t and don’t, because no one ever worked to make this place enjoyable for everybody. As you said yourself: flame wars and insults are what this place is known for.
But whatever, man. Guess it’s free speech for you only and everyone else can go fuck off. And you know, that is your perogative. Your site, your rules, most definitely. Just remember that Side-Line is NOT the be-all, end-all of promotion by ANY means and bands don’t even need a label anymore.
Oh, and also: without this forum A LOT of people are not going to come here anymore.”
Because in the end, I don’t give a fuck about Side-Line but some people’s egotistical bullshit has GOT to be called out.
